Names

I've just sent off my relatives off minutes ago. They had came all the way from KL, Malaysia yesterday afternoon to pay us a visit. How nice of them. Our relationship has always been very close even though we stay thousand of kilometres away. As usual the host would prepare a table of splendid dishes for the guests.

We were joking about the names of my aunties and my mum. LOL. My first aunty is called Flower. My mum, Red Peach. Then my third aunty, Garden. And lastly my fourth aunty, Pineapple. HAHAHA... we were laughing like hell. And joked that my grandfather or grandmother couldnt give proper names on those times. All names are on greens. They just took it lightly on naming their kids.

When my grandfather was around my father generation had to settle for "Eng" as their middle name. Then my generation leh? All the middle names comes with "kheng" Its very special whenever i visit my grandfather tomb during QingMing, all the names there are craved with 刘荣 " " and 刘庆 " ". after my grandfather had passed away, somehow this middle name thingy stopped. Maybe its hard to find good first name for my other cousins.

My father has never given anyone of us a christian name. This wasn't a really an issue for me. My brother called himself Andy in secondary school. So coincidentally he became Andy Lau, same as the HongKong superstar lor. I was a puzzled why he would want to call himself that. It was like imitating somebody in my opinion. I thought to myself, why can't we just accept the names that were given to us by our parents? But slowly i had accepted his name, unconsciously.

I came to realised the important slowly as i started working. It seems like its easier to connect to people the first time with a christian name. You remember people easily with their angmoh mia then dialect mia. In my opinion it get things done efficiently. But one should not get overly done with angmoh mia and forget their dialect one. IMHO, dialect name always gives a closer "feel". My mum always called me kheng hock. But when she wanna make me do something, she will call me with my HanYuPinYin name....Arrggghhh....And it never fail to make my hair stand!!!
Ahem.. I'd given her tons of names!!!

Hahaha.. Anway I am considering to get myself a christian name.. still thinking of a good one..
