Outsourcing have always been a problem to the people working in IT sector. In a big organisation, chances are their IT dept are outsourced, or have plans to outsource. These big companies want to cut down on the cost of hiring IT professionals. To them, IT dept are only as a supporting role, bringing cost up. Sales on the other hand are more valuable as they bring in sales and income to a company.

During my poly days, the courses of IT are abundant, and the government gives projection that in the next ten years this sector is going to grow like a 100% or so. Yeah, I am almost in the 10th year liao, the sector is growing almost like the projection, but at the same time i am seeing more people getting out of jobs. If they are not outa jobs, they are getting peanuts paycheck. How can we survive at if this carries on?

Two years ago, i was working in Dell doing some web stuffs. I was hiring under an agency(getting peanuts, despite the fact that i completed NS) to work as contract staff but was renewable EVERY 3Months (might be jobless every 3months). One year later, I resigned as it couldn’t offer me job security. I joined SA tours with a year exp and was given 1.7k. They got me an assistant who was proficient in web and IT but he was paid like $800 a month. Fuck lor he poly leh.. Damn.. that’s not how you treat a fresh poly grad hor.

NTU is not spared from outsourcing either. Today, my manager advised us that it would be good to make our skill as valuable as possible. NTU is already outsourcing staff for its main computer centre. And a time may come for the outsourcing exercise to reach every school. If this hits me, I won’t be outta job, but will be hired under an outsourcing company. What could be worse if you are in your 40ish? You think that company will hire you?

It makes me realize even more why my other older colleagues <35yrs are holding on tightly to their jobs. Trying ways to make their role seems more important then other perhaps?

We can do whatever we want and try to keep our jobs, but we cannot reverse time. Age is always ahead of us.
